Schrödinger’s Lens – A Series of Specialized Lectures on Science and Art
From Stars to Communication Technologies – Michal Bursa, Ph.D., Director of the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences

Astronomy is not just the science of distant stars, galaxies, and the universe. Astronomy directly influences our daily lives, though we are largely unaware of it. Many commonly used technologies actually have their origins in astronomical research and development. Beyond this practical dimension, modern astronomy has undergone a fundamental transformation in recent years due to the rapid development of advanced computing techniques, deep learning methods, and artificial intelligence. Astronomers are processing ever-larger volumes of data, which hold the key to new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the laws of nature. The concept of “astronomically large data” is suddenly taking on a whole new dimension.

Mgr. Michal Bursa, Ph.D.
A leading Czech astrophysicist who assumed the directorship of the Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in May 2022. His scientific work focuses on relativistic astrophysics, particularly the study of physical processes in the vicinity of compact objects such as black holes and neutron stars. He studied theoretical physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague. In addition to his scientific and managerial activities, he is also dedicated to popularizing astronomy, where he brings the fascinating world of modern astrophysics and the workings of the universe to the public in an accessible way.

Schrödinger’s Lens is a series of private lectures designed for those seeking true intellectual depth and exceptional experiences. In the age of artificial intelligence, when everything takes place only through screens, this is an excellent opportunity for an authentic and lively face-to-face encounter with the lecturer and other participants. In an interesting and unconventional setting, the goal is not merely to passively receive information, but also to engage in lively and personal dialogue together.

Practical information: Meeting point in front of the main entrance to TechtoWer on May 13 at 5:45 PM
